Teens OCD Disorder
OCD is a kind of anxiety disorder that compels teenagers to behave in certain ways over and again. Teens with OCD have thoughts that something could be harmful, dangerous, or dirty. They have strong compulsion to do certain things repeatedly in order to remove scary thoughts or to make sure that things are safe and clean. The extent of this behavior is at such a great extent that they think repetition is needed to neutralize their uncomfortable feelings.
Types of OCD:
OCD can create compulsion for different kind of behavior problems. Mostly people having OCD fall into following category
Washers:- Cleaning or hand washing compulsion
Checkers:- Reputedly check things associated with dangers
Sinners:- Having a fear that something terrible will happen and they will be punished
Hoarders:- Compulsively collect useless things
Symptoms of OCD:
People having OCD face both obsession and compulsion. There are some common obsessive behaviors that are found in OCD patients like fear of germs, excessive focus on moral ideas, order and symmetry, superstition, and intrusive sexuality. Other compulsive behavior includes doubled checking of security, over cleaning, counting, tapping, doing senseless things, praying excessively etc.
Suggested treatment therapies:
There are many treatment therapies suggested for OCD including self help and medication. The most effective therapy that is recommended by health professional is cognitive behavioral therapy. It involves two major components i.e. exposure and response prevention, and cognitive therapy. Response prevention is associated with repeated exposure to the source of obsession. The focus of cognitive therapy is catastrophic thoughts. It teaches healthy and effective ways of responding to obsessive thoughts.
Family and group therapy:
There are also some other suggested therapies for OCD. It includes medication, family therapy, and group therapy. Sometime antidepressants are used for the treatment of OCD. The aim of family therapy is to promote understanding of the disorder and to reduce conflicts in family. Group therapy is an attempt to increase interaction between fellow OCD sufferers and to provide full support and care to the victims.
Self help for OCD:
There are also some self help techniques that can be effective to deal with OCD disorder. These include:-
- Educate yourself about OCD
- Stay connected with family and loved one
- Connect with an OCD support group
- Medication, yoga, and self relief techniques
- View OCD as a behavior problem not as a character flaw
