Social Awkwardness

About Social Awkwardness:

It is very normal for teens and adolescents to feel awkward in some social situations when they are going to a new school, meeting new friends etc, but it becomes a problem when they begin to feel extreme fear of being with people and to go out. Social awkwardness results depression which can affect school performance, interactions with peers, success making friends and dating, and even graduation from college. This disorder is actually very common, but the situations that can cause the symptoms of social awkwardness can be different.

Symptoms:

Some signs of this disorder include:
- discomfort, submissiveness, and vacillation when the center of attention

- avoidance of initiating conversations, performing, and ordering food in restaurants

- sitting alone at lunch, in the library, or separating from the group during meetings

- Overly worried about negative assessment, mortification, or possible humiliation.

Causes:

This problem can be caused by a combination of genetic factors and child-rearing methods. Embarrassing events in childhood can also be a contributing factor. It has been seen that the children who have been overly protected or rejected by their parents, are more likely to develop this problem. Children having problem in verbal communication or having physical disfigurement are likely to be more uncomfortable in social situations.

Treatment Option for the Disorder:

Various medication and therapies are given as the treatment of this disorder.

Medication: Medication can not cure this disorder, but it can just decrease the physical symptom of severe awkwardness. Medication is most helpful when used in combination of therapies. Three types of medication are used in the treatment such as Beta blockers, Antidepressants, Benzodiazepines.

Therapies:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: This therapy involves controlling the physical symptoms of awkwardness through relaxation methods and breathing exercises and facing the social situations that make fearful in a steady, regular way, rather than avoiding them.

Relaxation Therapy: This therapy involves deep breathing exercises, regular practice of techniques such as meditation, yoga, and muscle relaxation which is very helpful in controlling over the awkwardness.
