Shoplifting Issues of teen
What is shoplifting?
Shoplifting is the act of stealing goods that are on display in a store. Shoplifting rarely affects the store as much as it affects the people who shop there. People suppose that shoplifting is a mental disorder. But the truth is very few people have kleptomania i.e. a habitual urge to steal and many shoplifters have enough money to pay for those stolen items. The fact is that shoplifting is stealing and shoplifters can be arrested or can be charged heavy penalty and possibly charged in crime.
Why Do Some Teens Shoplift?
There can be several reasons of the shoplifting. Peer pressure is one reason of shop-lifting. People might shoplift because they want things their colleagues have but can't afford them. Some teens find it as a way to get attention of parents or friends. Some might find shoplifting daring or some do it because their friends shoplifts. Some kids may do it as a way to challenge authority.
What can happen to the people who shoplift?
People may not realize how serious getting caught shoplifting is.
Getting caught red-handed in shoplifting may have to face many problems:
- They may be arrested through a store in handcuffs.
- They may be charged for stealing.
- Banned from stores or malls.
- People, who have been caught more than once, may be charged in a criminal record. In that case they won’t be able to get into college, get a job or do the things they want.
What parents can do:
Many people simply not realize the seriousness of the penalties for shoplifting. So parents should try saying that they don't want him/her to get hurt in the long run. Parents must make them understand the seriousness of shoplifting. Parents should try to provide him/her the things that they want. Parents should tell their teenagers about security systems, the legal consequences of stealing with the bad consequences about them in the society.
Treatment program:
There are several treatment centers which customize their program for the shoplifter kids and teenagers.
Boot camps: These camps provide the treatment by their strict and harsh programs but this helps teenagers to come out of this problems. This program keeps the children away from their home. They have Zero tolerance policy in which they give immediate punishment if any mistake is committed by anyone. These camps are called jail camps also.
There are various types of therapies offered to those experience with kleptomania.
Some of the therapies are:
Behavioral therapy: Behavior therapy is a psychotherapy that focuses on altering objectionable behaviors. This involves classifying offensive, maladapted behaviors and replacing them with improved types of behavior. This is also known as behavior modification therapy.
Cognitive therapy: Cognitive therapy is a psychotherapy that focuses on the feelings and emotions that results certain behaviors. This therapy can be used separately as well as with behavior therapy. The combined therapy is called CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and is used in many disorders.
