What is obesity?

Obesity is a problem caused due to unhealthy eating or excess eating. If a teen is obese it means he is overweight and has gained too much body fat. Generally obese teens are the teens whose weight is ten percent higher than the recommended weight. Obesity also leads to several other severe health diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and osteoarthritis.

Analysis shows that the child who is obese between 10 to 13 years of age has eighty percent of chances of becoming an obese adolescent.

The causes of over weight include genetic, biological, cultural and behavioral issues. Generally it occurs due to excess eating or over-eating. Lack of physical activity is also a major reason of obesity. The various factors to which adult’s obesity can be related are given below

Exercise - Different physical exercises such as cycling, walking and running are most effective ways to reduce body fat.

Weight loss programs - There are number of organizations that are offering various dieting products and services to the obese young persons.

Medication - Xenical and Meridia are the two medication therapy approved by FDA for obesity problems. These therapies help the obese person in decreasing unwanted body fat.

Residential treatment centers - Different treatment centers also offers services for eating disorders. These centers offer specialized treatment services that help teenagers to come out of over weight problems in a healthy manner. With the help of experienced specialists they design a specific plan for each teen.

Surgery - “Weight loss surgery” is the use of operational interventions for treatment of obesity problem. But professionals suggest avoiding such kind of surgeries.
