Down Syndrome in Teens
Competition among teenagers is rising day by day and there are lots of expectations from parents for a competent level of literacy skill in their kids. But all kids are not having the same knowledge level and some might face problems in particular subject. Such a case is found in teens having Down syndrome. They face difficulty in numeric and algebraic computation. Teens with Down syndrome are prone to some disease like hypothyroidism, and respiratory infections.
Reasons of this disorder:
Down syndrome occurs due to the presence of an extra “chromosome 21” in a person. There are some most probable causes of Down syndrome like smoking, mothers and fathers age, presence of translocation trisomy 21. Genetic materials mostly affect kids for this syndrome. This is due to chromosomal translocation in which a section of chromosome is placed over another chromosome.
Symptoms of Down syndrome:
Symptoms of DS vary from one person to another. Some of the common symptoms that are found in DS are:-
- Heart disease
- Leukemia
- Walking delay
- Short in stature
- Overweight etc
Harmful health effects:
Teens having Down syndrome face challenges in education, social interactions, job prospects etc. Mostly teens with Down syndrome have physical limitation like diminished muscle strength. They have a compulsion for sexual drive and gain some sexually transmitted disease. They have some dangerous health problems like congenital heart disease, hypertension, high blood pressure, seizure disorder etc.
Suggested treatments options:
There are many treatment therapy suggested for DS. Some of these are Doman Delacato method, Dolphin therapy, Down syndrome vitamins etc. This treatment method includes surgery for intestinal blockage and spinal problems. Other recommended therapies are speech therapy, occupational therapy, and vocational training. Also parents can play an important role in treatment of DS. They should encourage their young child to master development skills. They should find a right school for their child learning disability.
