Deletion Syndrome in Teens

These days’ youths are facing genetic chromosomal syndrome called Deletion syndrome. This is also known by some other names like DiGeorge syndrome or velocardiofacial syndrome. This is a rare disorder in which long arm of chromosome 22 is deleted that results in various abnormalities. Teens with Deletion syndrome face different behavioral and emotional changes in themselves.

Symptoms of Deletion syndrome:

Some of the common symptoms that are found in teenagers having deletion syndrome are:-

- aformed ears
- Hypotonia
- Short stature
- Mental retardation etc

Effects on health:

Deletion syndrome causes various disabilities like temper tantrums, brain abnormalities, seizures etc. People having this disorder have short head and distinctive facial features that include flat nose and mouth. They have hearing problems, and gastrointestinal problems. If a parent carries an imbalanced chromosomal translocation then there is a chance for teens for teens to get this disorder.

Different categories of the disorder:

Deletion syndrome is categorized into different types as listed below:-

- Chromosome 1p36 Deletion syndrome
- Distal monosomy 1p36
- Monosomy 1p 36

Suggested treatment options:

There is no genetic cure available for the treatment of this disorder. Its specific individual features are treated by some specialized treatments. Blood transfusion and immunisation with live vaccines are required to treat immune problems in children. Another treatment therapy called Thymus transplantation is used to address the absence of thymus in DiGeorge syndrome. Cardiac surgery is also sometime recommended for the treatment of Deletion syndrome.
